Assessment Services

The main purpose of a clinical psychology diagnostic assessment is to provide a detailed and accurate understanding of an individual's struggles and mental health condition. This process involves gathering information through clinical interviews, standardized tests, and other evaluation methods to identify symptoms, assess severity, and differentiate between similar disorders.

Key Goals

  • Establish an accurate diagnosis based on objective and subjective data.

  • Inform the development of personalized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual needs.

  • Enhance self-awareness by helping clients understand their strengths and challenges in relation to mental health.

  • Enable early intervention to prevent worsening of symptoms and improve long-term outcomes.

  • Monitor progress and adjust interventions, ensuring ongoing effectiveness of treatment over time.

Client Benefits

  • Clarifies the underlying cause of symptoms, so appropriate care can be provided.

  • Empowers clients to participate actively in their own healthcare and self-care decisions.

  • Fosters collaboration between client and clinician, building a shared understanding to guide recovery.

  • Improves overall well-being and daily life functioning by matching interventions to actual needs.

  • Inform others of the individuals difficulties and needs to foster appropriate support.

Assessments for Autism Spectrum Conditions and related areas of Neuro Diversity

When conducting an adult autism assessment, I draw upon information from standardized questionnaires, a developmental history, the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and thirty years of clinical experience.

This comprehensive approach typically provides sufficient information to support a well-informed diagnostic conclusion without the need for additional assessments. During the process, I review both your developmental background and your current circumstances to gain a clear understanding of your thinking patterns and personality style. Together, we will explore how these factors have influenced your life and identify any changes or supports that may be beneficial moving forward.

If further information were required, I am also trained in using the Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised (ADI-R) and the 3Di, developmental interviews which also consider a range of differential diagnoses. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – II  (ADOS-II) can be used, in those cases when more evidence is required, although this is rarely required.

You are welcome to invite someone who knows you well—such as a parent, partner, or close friend—to participate in the interview if you feel it would be helpful. However, their involvement is optional and not required for the assessment.

Assessments for ADHD

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Assessment and Intervention

Diagnostic assessments to consider Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder are conducted based on a full developmental history and use of the DIVA-5 ADHD assessment scale. The results of this assessment, will increase self-awareness, understand the underlying aetiology of the symptoms and form a basis on which to build effective coping strategies.

As a Clinical Psychologist, while I do see a role for using medication to manage the symptoms of this condition, I am not licensed to prescribe medication. If you are wanting to explore the use of medication, a psychiatric assessment is required. A psychiatrist will want to carry out the diagnostic assessment themselves, rather than use the information from an assessment and diagnosis carried out by myself. Therefore, if you are considering using medication, I recommend approaching a psychiatrist to conduct the full assessment and prescribe appropriate medication. Having undergone this assessment, I would then be happy to carry out therapeutic intervention to manage any related behavioural and psychological difficulties.

Functional Profiling

Functional Profiling for people diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum

Many people with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Condition, ask the question “Where am I on the Spectrum?” The spectrum is not a linear scale from Mild to Extreme, but each person has different characteristics, strengths and needs. A profile of strengths and needs is created for you as an individual based on the diagnostic criteria, including individual characteristics and needs.

I also use the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System - Third Edition, as an additional profiling tool and to identify future skill development needs. This can help to inform care plan and future goal setting for the individual. A full psychological formulation of the issues will identify appropriate ways forward.

Work Related Assessments

Organisations may request an assessment to identify the needs of an employee with an autism spectrum condition, ADHD or other form of neurodiversity. This will include an interview with the employee in order to identify their diagnostic profile, strengths and needs. An interview with managers will be carried out to define any perceived difficulties and their expectations. This information, together with identifying the resources will be used to ensure that the needs of both employee and employer are addressed.
